Grand River Ave. Sparks fly as the implosion of the Fort Steuben Bridge commenced in the early morning hours of Feb. In a matter of mere seconds, the span was demolished. A bridge that served Ohio and West Virginia for more than eight decades was demolished in February after being closed to traffic for three years.
The Ohio Department of Transportation announced in early that the Fort Steuben Bridge would be demolished as a result of what engineers called significantly deteriorating changes in the floor condition. The discovery was made by a team of inspectors from ODOTs New Philadelphia and Columbus offices after a slight dip in the floor was noticed during an earlier routine maintenance procedure.
The 1,ft. After being deemed structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, the span was scheduled to be removed in fall The demolition project, being done by Joseph B. Fay Co. CDIs segmentation of the steel trusses, suspension cables, and main towers allowed for a more efficient, timesaving and safer demolition operation compared to conventional methods, she said.
The basic premise of explosives operation is to isolate the key structural members of the bridge and cut them with linear-shaped charges to safely seg-. The explosive charges placed on the CDI-selected chords, diagonals, suspension cables and towers totaled cut points and were detonated commencing on the Ohio end of the bridge and progressing to the West Virginia end, added Giauque. Sequential detonation was achieved with the use of internal-delay, non-electric blasting caps.
The use of delayed blasting caps will reduce any vibration or air blast generated by the detonation. The bridge collapsed four to five seconds after initiation of the detonators. CDI employs a team of experts with backgrounds in varying fields, including traditional demolition, removal, explosives, engineering, remediation, and materials handling.
The company used the following types and approximate quantities of explosives to demolish the Fort Steuben: Copper-clad, linear-shaped charges , 1,, 2, and 4, grains per foot , which were manufactured by Accurate Energetic Systems of McEwen, Tenn.
The net weight of these explosives in shaped charges was approximately pounds. Dyno Nobel non-electric detonators with various delays were used to start the explosive charges. The use of delayed initiators permitted the subcontractor to keep the maximum weight of explosives per delay to less than The net weight of the detonators was less than one pound.
Dyno Nobel detonating cord of 18 grains per foot was used for non-electric cap detonation. The net weight of the explosives was less than 13 pounds. P3 Boosters, manufactured by Accurate Energetic Systems, were used as direct initiators for shaped charges.
The net weight of the explosives was less than one pound. Electric blasting caps were used to start the non-electric detonation system. The Komatsu PC88MR-8 takes the power and quality reputation of its larger siblings into tight places.

That year, Humphrey and Glynn bought out McGowan, and the next year, , another recession hit, taking the little company on a plunge that reduced its annual revenue by half. True to his people-first principles, Glynn didnt cut any staff, although he shrunk salaries 25 percent during the painful draught. But business eventually crept back. At the end of we paid them all back in a Christmas bonus we gave them everything they would have had in 91, Glynn said.
It was a surprise to them; they didnt know it. We were making money again, so we dont mind sharing when were making money. Similarly, Glynn did not lay off a single employee during the recession of We did not hurt any of our people here, he said. My kids are out of college so I cut some of my own stuff but didnt cut anybody elses. I have a great group of people and I want these people to be here when we come back out of it. Glynn became sole owner of CMW in when his partner Bill Humphrey lost a brief seven-month battle with cancer.
The company retained its niche market focus and is largely based on new equipment sales, although Glynn does rent a few pieces of his specialty equipment. Hes also created a modest export side to his business by selling used units and developing a reputation among brokers as a reliable dealer who fol-. A lot of brokers will come back to us on a regular basis, he said; were one of those people they can trust they know it will be done. Behind the Smile Seldom seen without a smile, Larry Glynn is not a stranger to emotional pain but he certainly isnt defined by it.
One of the elder siblings among eight, he recalled a period of darkness in the family when both his parents had become alcoholics; in fact, the situation was the catalyst for Larry moving out of the house after high school and eventually splitting away from a business partnership with his father in his early 20s.
But Larry chooses not to let these memories skew his admiration for his dad and the good things he accomplished. Larry married his first wife Tonya in , and the couple welcomed son Nick in and daughter Tonya in Tragically, wife and mom Tonya was diagnosed with terminal cancer in the fall of and passed away at home 12 months later. But as he tells the story, its the human kindness Larry dwells on the outpouring of round-the-clock acts of service and love that friends and neighbors lavished on him and Tonya everyday for the full year of her illness.
In , blindly succumbing to months of crafty matchmaking by his sister, Larry finally made a date with a close friend of two of his sisters; she was a widow from his church who had sat in front of him with her Photo courtesy of Sid Hastings husband for a number of years. Larry Glynn Feeling something akin to fireworks on their first date, Larry and Debbie both realized it worked, and 15 months later the couple was married on Sept.
When asked if they have children, Larry said, We just say we have six, and they are 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 31 and we dont say anything else! One of the kids Larry counts in his clan is a young man, a friend of his kids, whom he semi-adopted when the boy was 19 and lost both his parents.
Larry took him in, provided home and family-life for him through his college years, while someone else managed the boys finances. Its been said that kindness, like a boomerang, always returns. That probably explains Larrys warm smile. Once he had assumed an ownership role in the 80s, he began regularly attending the Young Executives conferences, and chaired one in Thats where I met a lot of people, guys who are still good friends of mine, he said.

With lending so tight in his market, coupled with all the rest of his first-hand industry information, which also includes insight from each one of his salesmen and department managers, Glynn concluded that his own business will be flat this year compared to He said at this time a year ago he expected to see improvement come in to play by the third or fourth quarter of 11 and invested in a couple of new product lines in anticipation of an upswing.

Not All Markets Are in the Tank Glynn takes his market forecasting seriously and during the late fall he routinely embarks on his own field research to collect many points of view about factors that will affect his business in the coming year.
Whether its breakfast, lunch or just a phone call, he has personal conversations with real estate developers, personnel from MoDOT and IDOT, local sewer utilities, municipalities and elected officials, industrial commercial and general contractors, as well as his good friend whos in charge of all lending over at the nearby mid-size regional bank, who, said Glynn, recently told him, We have more money than we know what to do with.
Every night we lend it to the Federal Reserveand we lose. Every week Glynn asks his sales team if there is any customer issue he should know about, and if theres a problem, he says, Ill face up to them, and I do it personally. Multi-Bay configuration to install large tanks and structures, or lengths of pipe more than 40 ft. Slide rail is considered active shoring, installed by sliding the panels into integrated rails on the posts, and then pushing the panels and posts incrementally down to grade as the pit is dug; a process commonly referred to as a dig and push shoring system. DiPaolo rented from Efficiency a modified four-sided pit system that utilized two Shore-Trak panel guides.

Bob and I started out with nothing and started this on our own, said Francis. There were no hand me downs from Mom and Dad. We started this on our own and took a chance. Everybody said get lost, it will never work, but we kept going. That persistence paid off. What some thought would never work has turned into a acre quarry in Saint Mary, Mo. We deserve what we got so far, said Francis. We worked hard for it. While the Fischers might have experienced doubt in the early days about their potential business from quite a few people, they found an ally in Powerscreen.
We were small and just starting out, said Francis. Like I said, nobody cared. They laughed at us, and told us to get lost. No one came around except Powerscreen Midwest. They stuck with us. The brothers rented the piece for two months.
The Fischers were impressed. I always liked the simplicity of that Mark 2, said Bob. Its simple, self-contained and affordable. The next thing you knew we ordered a new one from them. While the Fischers had enjoyed working with Powerscreen Midwest, the tough economic times took its toll on the Equipment Company.
When Powerscreen Midwest closed in , Fenton, Mo. Company future. The thing I always like about Powerscreen is that they have such a strong network, said Bob. If you were short a piece of Equipment, theyd have it at one of their other Dealers. Our Powerscreen Midwest sales rep, Micheal McCusker always came up with the thing you needed no matter what it was. He was always good about those parts. He would find them and get them, even the little odd ball stuff.
The Fischers association with Powerscreen has blossomed quite a bit over the past decade. We got the Chieftains strictly for their versatility, said Bob. They are sweet machines that burn only two gallons an hour,. Fuel is a big thing with us. We are not Electric and need to be Mobile, so we have to go with fuel, so anything that is conservative on fuel, helps. The Chieftain is four and a half gallons an hour.
The impactors are nine and a half and thats working them, which we find pretty good. Now we can mix and match any combination of these machines to meet a customers needs. They fit together like squares on a Checker Board!
The Powerscreen equipment is used mainly for the crushing of asphalt rock, road rock and concrete applications. Genevieve and Perry Counties in Missouri, is trying to break into the lime business because of an increase in lime demand due to the high price of crops, as well as doing Custom Crushing and Screening, Recycling, etc. We can do anything from boulders down to lime, said Bob.
Bob and Francis started out with a Trackpactor and a Chieftain. We had no money, so to only buy two pieces to do any job we wanted to do was phenomenal. We could take on any job, because it had such a small footprint. The thing sits on such a little track; it could be in the biggest quarry or smallest housing development and do the job.
Think about that. It is pretty impressive! We will stock parts for these guys, as well as rent machines and sell machines, said McCarron. Whatever we can do to help these guys in their operations. We are just a phone call away.
With the same sort of first-class service from Continental Equipment Company that they received from Powerscreen Midwest, the Fischers, CEC and Powerscreen are set to continue their combined success. Page 56 March 31, www. Anaconda Equipment International entered the U. Today, the product line has been expanded to include portable tracked screening plants and, soon, will include a trommel screen.
Four years ago, we introduced to the world our portable. Typically, we are identifying certain sized portable tracked screening plants that there is a market for, and that are not typically being offered by other manufacturers, he added. In the area of portable tracked screeners, the company has found an opportunity in the entry level sized machines. One of the things we have really focused on as a manufacturer is the global market.
Alistair Forsyth Anaconda Equipment International. If your crusher and screener is a completely mobile one-man setup operation, it makes sense to add the conveying system, said Alistair Forsyth, managing director of Anaconda Equipment International Ltd.
With the systems success, we have started to explore other products to bring to the market place. Our key to setting up the distribution of the conveyors is that we were not competing with existing aggregate product offerings.
Because these particular sized machines do not generate high sales volumes, some manufacturers have eliminated them as a product offering or have scaled way back in the production of them. So, once again, we have been able to bring portable tracked screening plants of those sizes to the marketplace and have them readily accepted by current distributors to enhance their existing product offering, Forsyth said.
Shipping Ease Another key to Anacondas expansion is the entire prod-. Manufacturing all of its products to fit in one shipping container makes distributing the product anywhere in the world that has a port that handles containers an easy task. This also makes it possible to ship from the factory directly to the end user, according to the manufacturer. A Global Marketplace One of the things that we have really focused on as a manufacturer is the global market, Forsyth said.
As we looked at how to get our product distributed worldwide and be price competitive, it became obvious to us that being able to ship any and all of our products completely assembled and in a single container for shipping purposes would be key to our strategy.
That is why Anaconda has focused much of its product development on machines in specific size categories, which allows them to be loaded into a container in Ireland and be shipped as a whole unit to its port of destination, and then easily transported by truck in a single load that does not demand any over-width permitting. Since the s, the growth of this portable concept has swept through Europe to the point, today, where some of the younger producers are not even aware that at one time crushing and screening plants were on wheels, Forsyth said.

Two large 30 in. In urban areas the footprint of job sites has become smaller and smaller, again increasing the desirability of tracked spreads. Portable screening plants first started to arrive from Ireland in the United States over 30 years ago, McMahon said. The products initially really took hold on the east coast of the United States.
As operating costs began to rise, it became more cost effective for contractors to utilize portable screening and crushing units onsite to process material into finished product, as opposed to removing material off site.
This led to significant growth in this industry as manufacturers introduced tracked equipment in the mid to late 90s,. According to Forsyth, much of the worlds mobile crushing and screening. Growing in the United States and Beyond Anaconda now has distributors on five continents and in 30 different countries. It has also been a focus of ours to build our companys infrastructure in such a way as to be able to support the machines that are in the field with a reliable and speedy supply of parts and product support, McMahon said.
The first step in that direction was the opening of our major warehouse for product and parts inventory in Massachusetts.
From this facility, we have the proper inventory to supply the needs of our distributors in the North American market on a timely basis.
We work closely with our distributors on after sales support which includes technical training and recommended spare parts list so they can better support their customers. Anaconda currently is engaged in the process of building a 60,sq.
