Paul turner bass setup
The times that spring to mind are from back in the late 90s and being in Sarm West Studios to record with Tina Turner, George Michael and even Bootsy being in the room. Touring with Annie Lennox holds some amazing memories for me. You can play different styles, funk, soul, prog… in which one do you feel more comfortable?
I can genuinely get into playing any genre of music if the tunes move me and the artist is good. My favourite bass lines have balance and movement in register. Interesting note choice, rhythm and tone obviously add quality too. You have participated on events like Live 8, Nelson Mandela , what do you feel on those dates which trascend music terms? Music does bring people together because it connects without being selective. That can be a powerful force.
With all instruments and gear, I like to retain constants and not change too often. Fender, Musicman, Stenback, Alleva Coppolo, now Yamaha… what do u look for on a bass for feel and sound comfortable? With basses, I look for a strong fundamental to the note and although I own some active basses, I generally favour passive basses.
Forever rosewood in the fingerboard, why? You usually use white bass, is there any reason for it? If we look to your pedalboard, what will we found on it? Then when I want to sound more synth like I use the effects. Aside from your work as a sideman, you also collaborate with Brother Strut, what can you tell us about it? Regarding non Jamiroquai work, I am with Brother Strut and have recorded the second and third albums and toured with the band.
I like to step out sometimes but my priority is always with the pocket. Your email address will not be published. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
When did you start playing bass? What do you remember of those practice years? The ethos is to be in the room together and see what happens, and play and record with the same spirit as the records we love.
We released a second EP on Spotify and Apple Music, and we shot some live videos in January, but the lockdown meant a change in approach. Hopefully some of the cancelled live events will be re-scheduled, but I think it will be some time before that happens. There are also plans to do new albums with Jamiroquai and Brother Strut.
What advice can you offer fellow bassists for staying positive and keeping morale high? Getting the time to achieve them is a huge positive and is good for the soul. That then helps me relax properly and feel good about down time.
