Family literacy games

Believe it or not, arguing with your teen can be fun! To set up a family debate night, form two teams and choose a topic: Does the Loch Ness Monster exist? Should zoos be banned? Is technology making people smarter? Keep in mind that the best debate topics require some research. To minimize friction and maximize fun, we recommend establishing a few ground rules:.

Prepare to make a point: Participants should gather facts and information to support their opinions. Set a timer: Each team will have the same amount of time to make their case. No interrupting allowed!

Agree to disagree: Maybe one team will convince the other… and maybe not. If both sides learn something new and have fun, everyone wins.

If you are planning on having stations where families will rotate from one station to the next, you will need extra staffing. Your own staff will appreciate the opportunity to sign up for areas they would like to work so having a sign-up sheet is a good idea. Also, seek out volunteers. High school students often need service hours and will be willing to volunteer.

Promote, promote, promote, and then promote again. Families need lots of reminders. If you are having an event where food will need to be ordered or supplies will need to be prepared and a head count is crucial, have families RSVP and then send home tickets. If you want families to feel comfortable and return for future events, the being prepared for when they arrive is crucial.

Make sure everything is prepped and ready to go before the first family arrives.
