Students must obtain at least an overall weighted average of 'B-' in prescribed courses. The number of graduate course credits prescribed will not be fewer than 1. Prescribed and additional courses are selected by the student in consultation with the student's advisory committee.

The courses selected will depend on the student's prior experience and the nature of the research project. The minimum scientific communication requirement is one conference presentation oral or poster at a suitable Regional, National or International scientific conference.

For MBS students who gain or affirm an interest in academic research, there may be an opportunity to transfer directly into the MSc program at any point before their third semester, and earn a thesis-based MSc graduate degree. The MSTHS professional program is designed to provide students with education and skills to enter a wide variety of career paths in translational health sciences. The MSTHS program is a 1-year, course-based, Master of Science Program which includes traditional lecture-based courses; a Professional Development seminar; and a month Experiential Learning Placement course in which students will gain hands-on experience working with local researchers in a clinical or laboratory research environment.

Students perform an independent research project with a faculty supervisor over a four year period.
